Nigeria’s Senate President Calls For UK Support In Strengthening Democracy
Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has reached out to the United Kingdom government, urging assistance in deepening democracy in Nigeria. During a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Mongtgomery, and his delegation to the Senate leadership at the National Assembly in Abuja, Akpabio expressed Nigeria’s eagerness to learn from the UK’s experience to strengthen its democracy.
A statement by the Special Assistant to the Senate President on Media/Communication, Anietie Ekong, outlined Akpabio’s sentiments. He emphasized Nigeria’s position as a developing democracy and acknowledged the UK’s potential to offer valuable insights and support in this journey.
Akpabio underscored the 10th Senate’s commitment to a people-centered legislative agenda, focusing on areas such as the economy and infrastructure to benefit Nigerian citizens. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and the need to align legislative frameworks with modern realities.
Furthermore, Akpabio affirmed the Senate’s intention to amend the Electoral Act to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and the credibility of election outcomes.
In response, High Commissioner Mongtgomery reiterated the UK’s longstanding relationship with Nigeria and its support for democratic practices in the country. He emphasized the strong ties between both nations, including people-to-people connections, diplomatic relations, and shared democratic values.
Mongtgomery expressed the UK’s interest in collaborating with the Senate and understanding its vision and priorities. He highlighted the significant presence of Nigerians in the UK and vice versa, emphasizing the interconnectedness between both countries.
