EFCC Clarifies Position On Foreign Missions’ Financing
EFCC Clarifies Position On Foreign Missions’ Financing
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has underscored that it does not possess the authority to dictate or prohibit foreign missions’ handling of their finances. Wilson Uwujaren, the Acting Director of Public Affairs for the EFCC, emphasized this stance in an interview with Arise Television.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Uwujaren clarified that while the EFCC acknowledges the diplomatic privileges enjoyed by foreign missions under international law, it refrains from interfering with these prerogatives. He emphasized that it is not within the EFCC’s mandate to impose bans or directives on how foreign missions manage their financial affairs.
However, concerns have been raised regarding certain practices observed in the handling of consular services by foreign missions, particularly invoicing in dollars and determining exchange rates with Nigerians and foreign nationals. These practices, deemed in conflict with Nigerian laws and regulations, prompted the EFCC to address the issue through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The EFCC’s intervention aimed to bring attention to these practices, which were observed over time, including the engagement of third parties to conduct consular services on behalf of foreign missions. Uwujaren clarified that the EFCC issued advisories to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rather than directly communicating with foreign missions.
This clarification seeks to dispel any misconceptions about the EFCC’s role in regulating foreign missions’ financial activities while affirming its commitment to upholding Nigerian laws and regulations.
