Edo Road Accidents Claim 42 Lives In Just Four Months, Reports FRSCIn a startling revelation, the Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that road accidents have claimed the lives of 42 people between January and April 2024. This alarming statistic was disclosed by the State FRSC Sector Commander, Paul Okpe, during a press briefing in Benin City on Tuesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Commander Okpe detailed the distressing figures, noting that the state witnessed 57 road accidents within the first four months of the year. The breakdown of fatalities shows a particularly deadly January, with 22 deaths, followed by four in February, 11 in March, and five in April.

A total of 537 passengers were involved in these accidents, resulting in 42 deaths and 206 injuries. The remaining passengers were fortunate enough to escape unscathed. Okpe attributed the high incidence of crashes to factors such as overspeeding, brake failure, route violations, dangerous driving, and the use of mobile phones while driving.

In response to these troubling trends, Commander Okpe urged motorists to adopt safer driving practices and embrace a culture of road safety to prevent further loss of life. He emphasized the need for careful driving and adherence to traffic regulations as essential measures to protect lives on the roads.

Additionally, Okpe called for the collaboration of stakeholders in the transport sector to support the FRSC’s mission to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities. This appeal was made during a meeting with transporters in Benin City, where Okpe underscored the importance of sensitizing those in the transport industry about road safety.

“We are here to educate and sensitise drivers, owners of trailers and trucks, and passengers on the need to imbibe a safety culture while using the road,” Okpe stated. He highlighted that this initiative is part of the Corps Marshal’s broader efforts to mitigate road traffic crashes and reduce fatalities, especially those involving trailers and trucks transporting goods, animals, and people.

The FRSC Sector Commander affirmed that this sensitisation campaign would be conducted across the state, aiming to ensure that all road users in Edo develop and maintain a safety-first mindset while on the road.

As the FRSC continues its efforts to promote road safety, it is imperative for all stakeholders, including drivers, vehicle owners, and passengers, to cooperate and contribute towards making Edo’s roads safer for everyone.

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
