Speaking during an ongoing protest at the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters in Abuja, Ajaero criticized the tariff increase and the lack of consultation with stakeholders in the power sector.
Highlighting the dire situation, Ajaero emphasized that the current electricity generation in Nigeria falls short of meeting the needs of even a single state like Lagos. He condemned the disparity in power supply, where some Nigerians are privileged with up to 20 hours of electricity while others endure only a few hours of service.
The NERC had announced a significant hike in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, triggering outrage among consumers. Under the new tariff regime, Band A customers would pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, marking a staggering 240 per cent increase from the previous rate.
