Kogi Landlords Favouring Yahoo Boys Over Law-Abiding Tenants, Says Estate Manager
Kogi Landlords Favouring Yahoo Boys Over Law-Abiding Tenants, Says Estate Manager
Peter Suleiman, an estate manager in Kogi State, has raised concerns over the alarming trend of landlords in the state preferentially renting out their properties to individuals involved in Internet fraud, commonly known as Yahoo boys, instead of law-abiding citizens engaged in legitimate businesses.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview with DAILY POST on Monday, Suleiman expressed dismay at how this practice is exacerbating crime rates in Kogi State. He highlighted that many landlords are increasing their annual rents without making any improvements to the properties.
Suleiman, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Good Trust Estate Management Limited, called on the State Government to urgently address the exploitation of genuine citizens by landlords, warning that failure to do so could have dire consequences for the state.
“It is quite unfortunate that landlords in Lokoja and its environs prefer to give their houses to Yahoo boys instead of law-abiding citizens,” Suleiman lamented. “When they approach these landlords, they can pay for a single or room and parlour self-contain for two or more years at a high amount.”
He emphasized that this preference for Yahoo boys by landlords stems from a belief that such tenants will not stay in the properties for long before vacating, thereby enabling landlords to quickly re-rent the premises.
“The essence of them insisting on Yahoo boys is that they know those guys will not stay fully in the house before exiting,” Suleiman explained. “What is now the hope of the common man who is doing genuine business on the street? This is promoting cyber fraud.”
Expressing concern about the proliferation of fake house agents in the state, Suleiman called for urgent government intervention to curb the exploitation of tenants and prevent Kogi State from becoming a breeding ground for cybercrime.
“If not urgently addressed, Kogi State will be snowballing into a hub of cyber fraud simply because of the mindset of these landlords who want to amass quick wealth for themselves without considering the implications,” he warned.
