INEC Chairman Engages Party Leaders Ahead Of Ondo And Edo Governorship Polls
In preparation for the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), convened a meeting with the National Chairmen and other leaders of political parties. During the session, Yakubu announced that INEC had finalized and published the final list of candidates and their running mates for the Edo state election. He emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to electoral guidelines and urged all political parties to ensure the timely submission of candidate names before the closing date for the Ondo governorship election portal on May 20th.

Yakubu provided key dates for the elections, stating that the Edo Governorship election is scheduled for September 21st, 2024, while the Ondo Governorship election will take place on November 16th, 2024. He underscored the need for parties to maintain law and order during the electoral process and encouraged adherence to timelines for activities such as the upload of polling and collation agents’ lists.

Additionally, Yakubu announced the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in both states, allowing eligible citizens to register or transfer their voter registration. He emphasized that the CVR is exclusively for new registrants and those seeking to transfer their registration, cautioning against illegal multiple registrations.

The INEC Chairman also highlighted the availability of uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for collection during the CVR period and urged individuals who have not collected their PVCs to seize the opportunity to do so.

Furthermore, Yakubu informed party leaders about vacancies in National and State Assemblies due to various reasons, including death or resignation of members. The Commission will soon announce dates for bye-elections in affected constituencies.

Key figures in attendance at the meeting included Abdullahi Ganduje, the embattled national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Julius Abure of the Labour Party (PDP), and representatives from other political parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
