According to Nasir Raji-Mustapha, the Director-General of the National Productivity Centre, the proposed productivity-led wage system will ensure that workers who demonstrate high levels of productivity are rewarded accordingly, regardless of their grade level. This means that employees on the same salary scale could potentially earn different wages based on their individual performance.
Raji-Mustapha emphasized that productivity is a crucial factor in driving the country’s economic growth, and the government is keen on formulating an innovative wage system to reflect this reality.
He further highlighted the collaborative efforts between the government and organized labor in developing this new proposal, noting that stakeholder engagement, including input from labor unions, is integral to the process.
The Director-General revealed that the first phase of the study on the productivity-led wage system has been completed, with the next step involving consultations with various stakeholders to solicit feedback and recommendations. Subsequently, the finalized proposal will be presented to the federal government for consideration and potential adoption.
Additionally, Raji-Mustapha disclosed the center’s collaboration with international agencies and organizations to enhance the productivity and skills of Nigerian workers. This collaboration includes partnerships with entities such as the International Labour Organization, Japanese International Cooperation Agency, Africa Productivity Association, and Asia Productivity Association.
He also highlighted the center’s efforts in promoting productivity among youths, particularly within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps, with initiatives aimed at instilling a culture of productivity and skill development.
The upcoming National Productivity Summit, featuring Vice President Kashim Shettima as the keynote speaker, underscores the government’s commitment to advancing productivity and economic development in the nation.
