Falana Supports Picketing Of DisCos Offices, Criticizes NERC’s Action
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has voiced his endorsement of the picketing of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters and Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) offices across the nation in response to the recent hike in electricity tariff. Falana asserted that such actions are justified and legally sanctioned under Nigeria’s Labour Act.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Falana criticized NERC for failing to follow due process and engage stakeholders before implementing the unpopular tariff hike. He emphasized that NERC’s actions lacked transparency and violated the Electricity Act of 2023, which mandates public hearings before tariff adjustments.

The organized labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), had issued a warning to NERC, demanding a reversal of the tariff hike to N65/kwh by May 12, under the threat of nationwide picketing.

Falana highlighted the discrepancy between the tariff increase and the actual provision of electricity, stating that citizens should not be burdened with higher tariffs when power supply remains unreliable.

Expressing concern for the fairness and sensitivity of government actions, Falana emphasized that it is unjust to expect citizens to pay increased tariffs in exchange for inadequate or nonexistent electricity supply.

Falana’s support for the picketing underscores the legal and moral grounds for the labour unions’ protest against the tariff hike, emphasizing the importance of transparent and inclusive decision-making processes in matters affecting the public.
