According to reports by LIB, suspected bandits raided the university on Thursday night, May 9, 2024, and abducted several students.

The Kogi State Government confirmed the rescue operation in a press statement issued on Sunday, May 12, 2024. The statement, released by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, revealed that a local hunter and a DSS operative sustained injuries during the rescue mission.

The statement read in part: “This is to inform the general public that some of the students abducted by gunmen at the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, have been rescued safely by local hunters and other security agents, hours after the Executive Governor of the State, His Excellency Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo visited the institution to assure parents of his commitment to rescuing the students.”

It further explained that local vigilante groups and security agents engaged the kidnappers in a fierce shootout, forcing the criminals to flee with gunshot wounds, leaving behind the kidnapped students.

The injured students, along with others who were rescued earlier, have been taken to medical facilities for treatment. Security forces are currently conducting extensive search operations in the forests to ensure the safe return of all abducted students.

During the rescue operation, a local hunter and a DSS operative sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

The statement commended the bravery of local hunters and security forces for their gallant efforts in combating the criminals. It also praised the DSS for coordinating the operation based on credible intelligence.

The successful rescue underscores Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to ensuring the security and safety of the people of Kogi State. The statement urged residents to report individuals with gunshot wounds in their communities to law enforcement agencies.
