The Federal Government recently commenced the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal road, awarded to Hitech Construction Company Ltd. However, the project has faced significant backlash from Nigerians, including opposition leaders such as Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Chidoka proposed alternative measures, suggesting that the government should focus on improving Nigeria’s inland waterways and constructing small seaports along the coastal areas for efficient transportation of goods by ship.

Expressing doubts about the project’s financing, Chidoka emphasized that the financiers would struggle to raise funds unless budgetary allocations were utilized, highlighting concerns about the lack of competitive bidding and transparency in the contract award process.

Chidoka called for a suspension of the project to allow for public discourse and scrutiny, asserting that the current approach lacked transparency and adherence to due process.

The call for suspension underscores broader concerns about infrastructure development and fiscal responsibility, urging authorities to prioritize projects that align with national development goals and ensure accountability in public expenditure.

The controversy surrounding the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project underscores the importance of transparent procurement processes and robust public engagement in infrastructure development initiatives. As stakeholders debate the project’s merits, the need for accountability and fiscal prudence remains paramount to safeguarding public resources and promoting sustainable development.
