On Thursday evening, fire broke out in eight shops adjacent to the Real Gold petrol filling station at Oki-Ogbo, Kongbari Street in the Abayawo area of Ilorin. The flames threatened to spread to the nearby filling station, raising the specter of a larger catastrophe.
However, the swift response of the Kwara State Fire Service proved instrumental in containing the blaze. Despite the severity of the inferno, firefighters valiantly battled the flames and gained control by 8:34 hours, effectively extinguishing the fire thereafter. While the eight shops suffered extensive damage, nearby buildings, including the filling station, were spared from the flames, thanks to the efforts of the firefighters.
According to Hassan Adekunle, the spokesman of the fire service, investigations revealed that the fire originated from one of the shops in close proximity to a store selling engine oil and other flammable fluids. This exacerbated the intensity of the blaze, posing a grave risk to life and property in the area.
Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, Director of the state fire service, extended his sympathies to the victims of the fire and expressed hope for their swift recovery and restoration of what was lost.
