The heightened security measures come in response to allegations made by the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly, suggesting that Governor Siminalayi Fubara intended to demolish the quarters. This follows the governor’s surprise visit to the facility on Thursday, which he described as part of his regular duties.

Governor Fubara denied any plan to demolish the quarters, asserting his right to inspect the property as part of his responsibilities. He emphasized that his visit aimed to assess the situation and possibly implement improvements for the benefit of the residents.

However, the alarm raised by Amaewhule prompted anti-Fubara lawmakers and some All Progressives Congress (APC) members to maintain vigilance around the estate throughout the night.

The deployment of armed policemen underscores the tense atmosphere surrounding the political situation in Rivers State. It highlights the growing tensions between factions within the state government and raises concerns about potential clashes or further escalations.

The presence of armed security forces in a legislative residential area also raises questions about the appropriate use of law enforcement in political disputes. It emphasizes the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution to avoid further destabilization and protect the safety and security of all involved parties.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders must prioritize peaceful dialogue and respect for democratic processes to prevent further escalation and ensure the stability and well-being of Rivers State and its residents.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
