Supporters Rally Behind Oba Of Benin Amid Legal ChallengeThe Edo State High Court premises witnessed a remarkable display of solidarity today as palace chiefs, priests, priestesses, and members of the Benin royal family gathered to support His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, in the face of a legal challenge.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The show of support comes in response to a lawsuit filed against the monarch by two suspended Enigie (Dukes) of the Benin Kingdom, Professor Gregory Akenzua and Chief Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen. The suspended dukes contest the authority of the Oba to remove them from office, arguing that only the state governor holds such constitutional power.

In their lawsuit, the suspended dukes cite their appointment as traditional chiefs, duly recognized by the Edo State Government under the Traditional Rulers and Chieftaincy Law. They assert that any disciplinary action against them falls within the jurisdiction of the State Executive Council, not the Oba.

Central to their defense is the exercise of their right to freedom of speech, as they contend that their actions, including a letter addressed to the governor advocating for rural development, were within the bounds of the law.

The presence of supporters at the court premises underscores the significance of the case for the Benin Kingdom and its traditional institutions. It reflects a collective determination to uphold the authority and integrity of the Oba while affirming the importance of established legal procedures in addressing disputes within the kingdom.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the solidarity shown by palace chiefs, priests, and other stakeholders reaffirms their unwavering commitment to the preservation of Benin’s rich cultural heritage and the revered position of the Oba within the community.
