The linesman ruled that De Ligt was offside when Bayern Munich scored, leading to the goal’s cancellation. Despite protests from the Bayern Munich bench, the decision stood, as it occurred before the goal was scored, preventing intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) or the center referee.
Following the match, de Ligt expressed his frustration, stating, “If it’s offside, it’s offside. But I think we made rules in football, and the rules say if it isn’t clear offside, which it wasn’t because I haven’t seen it yet, of course, I don’t know…This is a shame.”
He revealed, “The linesman said to me, ‘I am sorry, I made a mistake.’ In the end, you know, I am not the type of person to blame the rules or the referee.”
Despite Bayern Munich’s efforts, including taking the lead in the 68th minute, Real Madrid secured their place in the Champions League final with a 4-3 aggregate scoreline, following late goals in the 88th and 91st minutes.
