It is noteworthy to recall that soldiers, who were previously involved in peacekeeping and rescue operations, met fatal outcomes in the community. Consequently, the military purportedly retaliated by setting fire to the community.

Reports surfaced yesterday indicating that soldiers deployed to the community abruptly departed on Tuesday without issuing any prior notice or explanation.

Addressing the recent assault, a former chairman of Akugbene, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed surprise at the sudden withdrawal of soldiers. He mentioned that some indigenes of Okuama promptly returned to the community following the soldiers’ departure. He speculated that soldiers of Urhobo descent at Okuama may have provided advance notice of the planned withdrawal. Despite this respite, concerns arose as three members of their community were reportedly ambushed and assaulted with machetes by individuals returning to Okuama.

Confirming the incident, another source from a neighboring community revealed that soldiers left Okuama on Tuesday evening, citing orders from higher authorities. Regarding the clash involving youths from Akugbene and Okuama, armed youths from Okuama allegedly attacked and wounded individuals from Akugbene, who had ventured into Okuama upon hearing of the soldiers’ departure.

Regrettably, one of the two individuals who managed to escape the assault and return to Akugbene has succumbed to their injuries.

Reacting to the situation, the chairman of the Okoloba community, Clement Koki, affirmed their commitment to peacekeeping efforts and reliance on divine intervention through prayer for protection and support.
