In a circular addressed to all heads of local government administration and signed by the Director of Information and Communications of the commission, Ebirieneuket Nteile, it was stated that any staff member who disregards or violates these instructions will face dismissal from service.
The circular emphasized that officers are not permitted to honor or appear before Members of the Assembly or respond to any purported invitations from any individual or group without prior permission from the Acting Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission.
This decision comes amidst the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, which has intensified in recent times. The state’s political landscape has been marred by tensions between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
The rift between the two factions was exacerbated when the State House of Assembly, on April 22, passed the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill into law, despite Fubara’s veto.
During its 159th Legislative sitting, the Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, made the decision to override Fubara’s veto at the Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt.
In response to these developments, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) directed assembly members to initiate impeachment proceedings against Fubara without delay.
Political analyst Katch Ononuju has shed light on the strategic calculations behind former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s decision to temporarily align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his subsequent departure from the platform. Ononuju elaborated on the dynamics of the departure, recalling Obi’s perspective: “When Peter Obi said, ‘I don’t like you going to ADC,’ what he told me in Enugu is, ‘Look, the people said I can’t negotiate for power staying outside the room. I need to go into the room to go and negotiate with power.’” Ultimately, when internal obstacles made further progress impossible within the party, Obi publicly announced his exit, a decision Ononuju characterized as a natural and inevitable reaction to a dead-end political environment.
