1. 1. Abubakar Saleh Michika (January 1992 – November 1993): Running on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC), Michika became the first democratically elected civilian governor of Adamawa State during the transition program of former military President Ibrahim Babangida. His administration was cut short when the military returned to power in November 1993, and he passed away on March 10, 2018.

   2. Boni Haruna (May 1999 – May 2007): Haruna assumed office at the dawn of the Fourth Republic on May 29, 1999, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His path to the governorship was unique because Atiku Abubakar had originally won the election with Haruna as his running mate before Atiku was selected as Olusegun Obasanjo’s vice-presidential candidate. Haruna later won a term in his own right in 2003, ultimately serving a full eight years.

   3. Murtala Nyako (May 2007 – July 2014): A retired naval officer, Nyako succeeded Haruna under the PDP banner. Following legal battles that nullified his initial victory and subsequent re-runs, he won another term in the February 2012 election and later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His tenure ended abruptly in July 2014 due to an impeachment by the State House of Assembly, which an appellate court later declared unconstitutional. Following a period of succession disputes involving acting governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Bala James Ngilari successfully claimed his right as deputy governor to serve out the remainder of the term until May 2015.

Mohammed Umaru Jibrilla Bindow (May 2015 – May 2019): Bindow won the 2015 governorship election on the platform of the APC, succeeding Bala Ngilari after previously serving as a senator for Adamawa North. He served a single four-year term after losing his 2019 re-election bid to Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.

   5. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (May 2019 – Present): Fintiri, who had previously served briefly in an acting capacity following Nyako’s impeachment, won the 2019 governorship election under the PDP by defeating incumbent governor Bindow. He subsequently secured a second term after winning a closely contested 2023 election against APC candidate Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Binani), a victory that was later affirmed by the Supreme Court.
