Nigeria Backs Brazilian Candidate For Interpol Secretary General

Gaidam made these remarks during a visit by an Interpol delegation led by Vice President Valdecy Urquiza to the headquarters of the Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.

In a statement by Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Bolaji Kazeem, the Minister emphasized that Urquiza’s candidacy marks a new era in Interpol’s leadership. He praised Urquiza’s experience and commitment, endorsing him as a formidable candidate for the role of Secretary General.

“We are dedicated to collaborating closely with Brazil to ensure a fair and transparent election process that upholds democratic principles and accountability,” Gaidam stated. “I am confident that his leadership abilities, expertise, and dedication to international security will make him an exceptional choice for this vital role.”

Gaidam highlighted the longstanding collaboration and friendship between Nigeria and Brazil across various spheres, particularly in law enforcement and security. He cited joint efforts in combating drug trafficking and emphasized the importance of Interpol’s role in global peace and security.

Recognizing Interpol’s significance in addressing 21st-century security challenges, Gaidam affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the organization’s mission. He underscored Nigeria’s contributions to Interpol, including the appointment of the Interpol Vice President for Africa, AIG Garba Baba Umar (retd).

In response, Interpol Vice President Urquiza appealed for Nigeria’s support for his candidacy, stressing the importance of diversity and neutrality in leading the organization. He pledged to prioritize the needs of member countries and work towards enhancing Interpol’s support for its diverse membership.
