Enugu State House Of Assembly Acts To Regulate Masquerade Activities
In response to a disturbing incident involving the assault of a nurse, Ms. Blessing Ogbonna, by a group of masquerades in Ihe-Owerre, Nsukka Local Government Area, the Enugu State House of Assembly has taken proactive measures. They have formed an ad-hoc committee tasked with developing comprehensive regulations for masquerade activities in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The motion to establish this committee was raised by Mr. Malachy Onyechi, representing Nsukka West Constituency, during a session on Thursday. He emphasized the pressing need to address recurring issues of human rights violations, threats to life, and property damage linked to masquerade performances in his constituency.
The assault on Ms. Ogbonna, which resulted in her hospitalization, has drawn widespread condemnation and shed light on the darker aspects of masquerade traditions in the region. Mr. Onyechi noted that this incident is part of a troubling trend of violence associated with masquerade events, sometimes leading to severe injuries or fatalities.
In response to the attack, seven masquerades were apprehended and charged in a magistrate court in Nsukka for assault, extortion, and obstructing a federal road.
The primary objective of the newly formed committee is to standardize practices and rules governing masquerade activities. This includes their involvement in cultural displays, entertainment, or commercial ventures, with a focus on safeguarding the rights and well-being of all parties involved.
Mr. Onyechi stressed that the motion aims to strike a balance between preserving cultural heritage and ensuring public safety, emphasizing that it is not intended to target any specific individual or group.
Supporting the motion, Mr. Pius Ezugwu, representing Nsukka East Constituency, highlighted how masquerade activities have nearly sparked conflicts between communities in his area. He emphasized the importance of clear regulations to prevent such conflicts and uphold public safety.
Furthermore, this initiative underscores the challenges faced by essential service workers, such as nurses, who encounter disruptions in their duties due to unscheduled road blockages caused by masquerades.
The Enugu State House of Assembly’s action reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance cultural traditions with the imperative of public safety.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.
Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.
-
Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.
Frank Tietie’s Position
-
During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.
-
Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.
-
He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.
-
Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
