During the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration in Gusau, Governor Lawal spoke to the state workforce, underscoring his government’s determination to streamline the civil service system.
Expressing concern over the current state of affairs within the civil service, Governor Lawal highlighted the inadequate remuneration and working conditions faced by workers.
“I am dissatisfied with the take-home pay of workers and the state of their working conditions. However, I need to first ascertain the true number of workers to determine appropriate minimum wage,” he stated.
The governor called on the labor force to support his administration’s efforts in rectifying these issues, assuring them that the policies implemented are aimed at improving working conditions without any malicious intent.
“We are not on a witch-hunt, but rather, we are focused on instituting positive reforms in the public service and other sectors of the economy,” Governor Lawal emphasized.
In addition to addressing payroll irregularities, the governor highlighted ongoing efforts to settle outstanding financial obligations to workers.
“We have already disbursed a total of ₦3.841 billion towards settling gratuity and pension arrears for both state and local government employees. This commitment will continue until all outstanding pension and gratuity payments are fully cleared,” he affirmed.
Governor Lawal assured the workforce that once issues such as ghost workers and multiple salary earners are resolved, his administration will announce a new minimum wage.
The ongoing initiatives to verify the authenticity of staff across both state and local government levels are part of a broader strategy to revamp and enhance the efficiency of Zamfara State’s payroll system.
