Comrade Idris Lafene, the state chairman of the labor union, delivered the ultimatum during a subdued commemoration of the 2024 International Workers Day in Minna. The event, usually held at the 123 Quarters parade ground, took place at the Justice Legbo Kutigi International Centre.
The Contributory Health Care Scheme, implemented by the previous state governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bell, involved a two percent deduction from civil servants’ salaries.
Lafene expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “We received reports today from some of our members that NICARE has commenced deducting their money. This contradicts the agreement we had with the Niger State Government.”
He demanded the refund of deducted funds and urged the government to hold accountable those responsible for the unauthorized deductions, threatening to thwart the scheme otherwise.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, represented by Head of Service Abubakar Salihu, assured the NLC members of the government’s commitment to addressing the issue. Salihu also provided N5 million to each of the 25 local government areas in Niger State to ease transportation challenges amid fuel scarcity.
Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, pledged the government’s dedication to enhancing workers’ welfare and contributed N2.5 million to support transportation needs.
In a presentation titled “People’s First,” Ibrahim Gana, chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Niger State, emphasized the importance of prioritizing citizens’ well-being in government policies and decisions for societal progress.

However, both commercial and matchday revenues dropped by nearly 5 percent due to playing without European football.
Key highlights from the financial report include:

Seventh Consecutive Loss: The accounts marked United’s seventh straight annual loss after tax, which included £8.2 million in exceptional costs mainly linked to the departure of manager Ruben Amorim in January after 14 months in charge.
-
Stadium Expansion & Cost-Cutting: The club invested £63.5 million on land adjacent to Old Trafford as part of ambitions to build a new 100,000-capacity stadium, while co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has continued implementing strict cost-cutting initiatives and job reductions.
-
Future Outlook: Chief Executive Omar Berrada expressed confidence in the club’s trajectory and financial discipline, with the club projecting revenues between £740 million and £760 million for the current financial year.
Despite the positive financial outlook and a return to Champions League football under manager Michael Carrick, the team has faced a rocky start to the new Premier League campaign, picking up five points from their first five matches and exiting the English League Cup.
