In a statement released in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero asserted that Nigerians have endured significant hardships, particularly over the past year, due to what he described as a series of anti-poor policies implemented by the government.
Ajaero highlighted the adverse effects of policies such as the petrol price hike, the devaluation of the naira, and the recent increase in electricity tariffs. He emphasized the need for concerted efforts to protect the welfare of workers and the less privileged amidst the economic strain caused by these policies.
“As we navigate through this period of widespread suffering resulting from the ill-advised policies of the federal government, including the hike in the price of PMS and the devaluation of the naira, we must remain focused on safeguarding the welfare of workers and the disadvantaged,” Ajaero remarked.
He further underscored the importance of forthcoming negotiations on the National Minimum Wage, urging unity among workers to demand a wage that ensures a decent standard of living and alleviates poverty.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, Ajaero emphasized the crucial role of workers in wealth creation and urged the government to prioritize their well-being.
“We cannot continue working while living in poverty. We must stand together to advocate for a living wage that reflects our contributions to the economy and ensures our dignified livelihoods,” he concluded.
