According to reports, a NANS delegation, led by President Comrade Babatunde Akinteye Afeez, conducted a nationwide tour of Federal Roads Projects, visiting sites in the North-West and other regions. Following the inspection, the students praised the quality and pace of the construction but also highlighted areas needing improvement, such as pedestrian bridges near tertiary institutions located on major highways.

Umahi expressed his satisfaction that the students had independently initiated the project site visits across the six geopolitical zones. He noted that the students declined the Ministry of Works’ offer of logistical support, insisting on conducting their own assessments and forming their own conclusions.

However, during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Abati challenged Umahi’s decision to involve students in duties typically performed by politicians or government officials. Abati argued that students should prioritize their academic responsibilities over inspecting road projects.

Abati stated, “Minister Umahi was talking to a group of students, NANS. They went on an inspection of Federal Government road projects in Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, all the way to Sokoto State and the whole of the North-West. And they brought a report to the Minister of Works that this is what we have observed. Please, how is it that Nigerian students are now the ones going about inspecting road projects? These are students, NANS is an association of students. Why are these students not focusing on their studies? Why are they becoming politicians, going about inspecting projects and giving reports to the minister? When I was a student, we were very serious people, you have to stay on campus, you have to attend classes, but now students are inspecting road projects and I find that very curious.”
