Henry Mbachu, the representative of Awka 1 State Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in killings attributed to cult clashes in Awka.
In a video message released to DAILY POST, Mbachu lamented the deteriorating security situation in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, despite its status as the seat of government.
Mbachu highlighted the presence of top government officials and security agencies in Awka, including the governor, deputy governor, and heads of security agencies, yet incidents of violence persist.
He revealed that within the span of three weeks, at least 34 youths have lost their lives in clashes believed to involve rival cult groups, indicating a dire need for action.
“We cannot allow this to continue. Awka is the heartbeat of our state, hosting key government figures and security establishments. It’s incomprehensible that with such presence, we still witness these killings,” Mbachu stated.
Expressing his frustration, Mbachu questioned the efficacy of security measures in place, noting the proliferation of vigilante groups and the fortification of streets with gates, all seemingly ineffective in curbing violence.
To address the escalating crisis, Mbachu announced plans to convene a security summit, inviting all stakeholders and residents of Awka to participate on May 29.
The summit aims to collectively identify and address the root causes of the violence, formulate strategies for enhanced security, and generate actionable recommendations to be forwarded to government and security agencies.
Mbachu urged all residents to actively engage in the summit, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in restoring peace and safety to Awka.

Court Sentences Man to Four Years for ₦16 Million Money Laundering, Forfeits G-Wagon
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
