The Honorable Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, unveiled ambitious strategies for economic growth and development at the 6th Meeting of the National Council on Niger Delta in Asaba, Delta State. This significant gathering of stakeholders aimed to set a path towards a prosperous future for the region.

In his address, Minister Momoh expressed deep appreciation to the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Sheriff Oborevwori, for hosting the event and demonstrated gratitude towards other governors and representatives present for their dedication to the Niger Delta’s progress.

Minister Momoh emphasized the alignment of the Council’s agenda with the Eight Presidential Priorities of the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These priorities, including economic reform, peace, and infrastructure development, form the backbone of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” aimed at transforming the region.

“I urge your patience and support to accomplish this historic national task,” Minister Momoh appealed, highlighting the commitment of all Ministers and Permanent Secretaries to these priorities.

Enumerating the Ministry’s mandates, Minister Momoh outlined strategic objectives such as promoting peace and security, managing infrastructural projects, empowering youth and women, and accelerating environmental cleanup efforts. He also detailed collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to implement the Host Community Trust Fund under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

During his address, the Minister addressed crucial issues such as the deplorable condition of the East-West Road, a vital economic artery in the region. He assured stakeholders of ongoing efforts, including collaboration with the Ministry of Works, to improve the road and enhance economic activities.

The victims, Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde and his younger brother, Dr. Tahir Abu Emhoye, were kidnapped on January 2, 2026, around 7:30 p.m. on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi. While Dr. Tahir, a fresh graduate from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, was killed by the abductors, Dr. Babatunde, a housemanship staff at Edo University Teaching Hospital, Auchi, was released on January 15 after a ₦50 million ransom was paid.

The suspects—Saminu Kawujie, Idris Abubakar, and Sani Abubakar—were apprehended in separate operations.
