Tragedy struck in Minna, the capital of Niger State, as five children from three families suffocated to death after accidentally locking themselves inside a parked car for five hours.
The incident unfolded in Gurara Albishir area (Area 1) along Bida Road in Minna on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
According to reports, the children were playing in a spacious compound outside their homes when they unintentionally locked themselves inside an abandoned Honda Civic car. The car had been unused for approximately two years by its owner.
The children locked themselves in around 11 am, and their parents, unaware of their whereabouts, began searching for them. Sadly, their lifeless bodies were discovered in the car around 4 pm after an extensive search of the vicinity.
Among the victims were three siblings, the only children of their parents, and two other children from separate families, including the owner of the car. The deceased were identified as Zahra (10), Aisha (7), Fati (5), and Isah (7).
Aminu Ladan, the chairman of Chanchaga local government area, confirmed the incident, expressing condolences to the bereaved families after visiting the scene.
SP Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, also confirmed the incident, stating that it was reported at Kpakungu Division. The children were found inside the Honda Civic with Registration No. GO 778 ABC at Albishiri area.
Abiodun mentioned that the children suffocated inside the vehicle, and their bodies were later retrieved by their respective parents as the Police conducted investigations. The owner of the vehicle has been invited for questioning, and the investigation is ongoing.
