The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Yobe State has announced the arrest of six individuals suspected of vandalizing transformers and po wer substations in Damaturu.

Mr. Adamu Zakari, the State Commandant of NSCDC, disclosed this while presenting the suspects to the media in Damaturu on Wednesday.

Zakari explained that on April 14, NSCDC operatives apprehended 18-year-old Adamu Abdullahi and 19-year-old Isa Umar for allegedly vandalizing armoured cables behind the Yobe State Secretariat Complex in Damaturu, following an alert from a resident of Waziri Ibrahim Estate.

The commandant revealed that the investigation uncovered approximately 20 meters of 50-millimeter pure copper single-core cable valued at about N1.2 million, which had been vandalized and recovered from the suspects.

Further investigation implicated three other suspects in the vandalism and theft of the cables. The suspects admitted to their involvement and cooperated with the investigation, confessing to multiple incidents of transformer vandalism within Damaturu.

Zakari also mentioned the apprehension of Umar Mustapha, 34, by residents of Nayi Nawa Tsallake on April 6, for allegedly vandalizing a power substation. Items recovered from Mustapha included tools and fake identity cards.

Investigations revealed that some of the suspects were former ad hoc employees of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) who had been laid off.

The commandant stated that the suspects would face legal proceedings upon the conclusion of the investigations.
