The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has submitted crucial electoral documentation at the Kogi State Governorship Petition Tribunal in Abuja, marking a pivotal phase in the legal contestation against the election outcome that declared Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor of the November 11, 2023, gubernatorial race. Ajaka, who garnered 259,052 votes compared to Ododo’s 446,237, has raised concerns regarding discrepancies in the electoral process. During the tribunal session presided over by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu and his three-member panel, INEC’s legal representative, Uchenna Njoku, presented an array of items as evidence. These encompassed the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of the Election, INEC Manuals for Electoral Officers, and various forms utilized during the election: INEC Form EC8C, INEC Form EC8B, and INEC Form EC8E. Additionally, supplementary documents such as the List of Accredited Agents for SDP, the List of Accredited Ward Agents, and Receipts of Payment for Forms were tendered.

Justice Birnin-Kudu formally admitted these documents as exhibits, signifying a significant milestone in the tribunal’s proceedings. Following the presentation of the documents, Njoku sought an adjournment to adequately prepare for the introduction of INEC’s witnesses, with the aim of reinforcing the commission’s defense against the allegations brought forth by the SDP and Ajaka. The judge granted this request, scheduling the next hearing for April 16.

During a prior session, Justice Birnin-Kudu acknowledged the impending deadline of May 29 for the expiration of the SDP’s petition. Consequently, he adjusted the tribunal’s timetable, reducing the number of days allotted for the respondents to present their cases and for the filing of final written addresses from ten to five days.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
