He mentioned that Shaibu is currently assessing his options in light of appeals from various quarters.
Last week, Shaibu, through Emwanta, had written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, requesting a complaint form to formally petition against Justice Okungbowa.
Responding to the Edo State House’s request, the Chief Judge had constituted a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of perjury and divulging government secrets against Shaibu.
The panel, led by retired Justice S.A. Omonuwa, completed its investigation on Friday, April 5, and submitted its report to the Assembly on April 8.
After reviewing the probe report, the Assembly found Shaibu guilty of leaking state government secrets and subsequently impeached him.
Shaibu contested his removal, denouncing it as illegal, and vowed to challenge it through legal means.
Providing an update on the situation, Emwanta stated, “There has been no response from the CJN regarding Shaibu’s request for a formal complaint against the state Chief Judge, Andrew Okungbowa. However, there are efforts to suspend further action, as appeals have been made from certain quarters to refrain from taking further action against the Edo CJ. Hence, we are not proceeding for now.”
When asked if this meant that the former deputy governor was withdrawing his complaint due to the appeals, Emwanta clarified, “I didn’t say so. Appeals have been made for him to do so, and I believe this explanation suffices.”
