The Kwara State Fire Service has revealed that an air conditioning system explosion triggered the fire that ravaged the mini-store of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) pharmacy on Sunday night.
According to Hassan Adekunle, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, the fire, which erupted on the last floor of Building 7, where the pharmacy’s mini-store was located, was swiftly contained, sparing the rest of the two-storey building from extensive damage.
Adekunle stated that upon receiving the alert at about 19:31 hours on Sunday, the fire crew immediately responded to the scene and commenced efforts to contain the blaze and prevent further destruction.
Fortunately, only the pharmacy’s mini-store and an office were affected by the fire, while the rest of the building, including 12 wards, two pharmacies, a side lab, and cash offices, remained unscathed.
Investigations revealed that the fire originated from an office where an air conditioner had been left running since Friday, causing excessive heat buildup and resulting in the outbreak of the fire.
Adekunle emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety measures and urged the general public to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing future fire incidents.
It’s worth noting that this incident follows a separate fire outbreak in the Tanke area of Ilorin last Tuesday, which resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of Naira. Adekunle highlighted the role of the absence of fire-retardant materials and the combustible nature of the building’s materials in the escalation of that fire.
