The Nigerian Naira experienced a notable surge against the US dollar on Friday, marking a strengthening trend in both the official and parallel segments of the foreign exchange (FX) market. Currency traders in Lagos, commonly known as bureau de change (BDC) operators, reported a buying rate of ₦1,110 and a selling price at ₦1,150, resulting in a profit margin of ₦40.
Lawal, a BDC operator in Lagos, commented, “The dollar is falling, and it is not my fault. It is how the FX market is now.”
Simultaneously, the FMDQ Exchange, responsible for overseeing official foreign exchange trading in Nigeria, observed a 7.16 percent increase in the naira’s value, rising by ₦88.23 to ₦1,142.38/$ on Friday, up from ₦1,230.61/$ on Monday.
This uptick in the naira’s value follows the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) initiation of the third tranche of sales to BDC operators, aimed at enhancing liquidity and stabilizing the currency. Starting April 8, the CBN began selling foreign exchange to BDC operators at a rate of ₦1,101/$, contributing to increased availability of foreign currency in the market.
Furthermore, the CBN instructed all banks to discontinue the use of foreign currency-denominated collaterals for naira loans, reinforcing efforts to strengthen the naira against other major currencies.
These measures are part of the CBN’s broader strategy to fortify the naira and ensure economic stability. In response to these positive developments, the renowned financial institution Goldman Sachs Group Inc. projected on Friday that the naira could continue its gains, potentially trading below ₦1,000 to the dollar in the foreseeable future.

Cooking Gas Prices Drop Significantly Across Nigeria: Relief for Households and Businesses
A recent survey conducted by Naija News has revealed a notable decrease in the price of cooking gas in Nigeria, offering much-needed relief to households and small businesses. According to the survey, the cost of refilling cooking gas per kilogram has reduced significantly from ₦1,350 to ₦1,020.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This positive development is expected to ease the financial burden on Nigerian families and small enterprises, especially those that heavily depend on cooking gas as a primary energy source. The survey, encompassing gas stations and vendors from various parts of the country, shows that the reduced price may help lower the overall cost of living.
The revised price breakdown is as follows:
-
1 kg of Cooking Gas: ₦1,020
-
3 kg of Cooking Gas: ₦3,060
-
5 kg of Cooking Gas: ₦5,100
-
10 kg of Cooking Gas: ₦10,200
-
12.5 kg of Cooking Gas: ₦12,750
This decline marks a significant shift from the previous upward trend in gas prices and is likely to positively impact the economy, particularly the food and hospitality sectors. Businesses that rely on cooking gas will experience reduced operational costs, ultimately boosting their profit margins.
Experts attribute the drop in cooking gas prices to several factors, including fluctuations in global energy costs and adjustments within local supply chains. Despite recent variations in crude oil and natural gas prices, the reduction is perceived as a welcome development for Nigerian consumers.
By spending less on cooking gas, households and small businesses will now see some financial relief in their monthly budgets, especially during these economically challenging times.
