Amidst ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, the Federal Government has taken a significant step to address mounting debts in the electricity sector by removing the subsidy on electricity consumed by customers on Band A feeders. This move, spearheaded by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, aims to enhance liquidity in the power sector and promote sustainability………READ ALSO
The decision to remove the electricity subsidy follows discussions between government officials and industry stakeholders, who emphasized the need for cost-reflective tariffs to ensure the viability of the power sector. Adelabu, echoing sentiments from key players, stressed that sustaining the subsidy was no longer feasible, especially considering the country’s escalating power debt, which stood at N1.3 trillion to electricity generating companies and $1.3 billion to gas companies.
Despite initial resistance and concerns about the timing of subsidy removal, the Federal Government proceeded with its plan, underscoring the necessity of transitioning to cost-reflective tariffs over a phased period. Adelabu outlined a roadmap spanning two to three years, during which the subsidy would gradually diminish while maintaining consideration for the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly in light of recent policy changes such as the removal of petrol subsidy.
Critics of the subsidy removal argue that subsidizing electricity for affluent individuals and upscale neighborhoods is unjustifiable, advocating instead for targeted subsidies benefiting low-income earners and marginalized communities. However, the absence of a comprehensive database complicates efforts to implement such targeted interventions effectively.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by subsidy removal, Adelabu and other proponents of cost-reflective tariffs emphasize the long-term benefits of sustainable energy pricing, which can foster investment, infrastructure development, and improved service delivery within the power sector. Despite opposition and concerns about exacerbating the plight of Nigerians facing multidimensional poverty, the government remains committed to its strategy for transitioning to a more financially viable electricity market.
