Senator Plang Exposes Budget Controversy: Denies Padding Allegations For 2024 National Assembly Budget....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central in the National Assembly, refutes claims of budget padding for the year 2024, asserting that the legislature adhered to due process…READ ALSONational Assembly Plans Budget Review Of N28.77 Trillion Due To Naira Depreciation

Plang, a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, clarified this stance during a media interaction in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Monday.

As a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Plang debunked assertions made by Senator Abdul Ningi, stating that the National Assembly passed a budget totaling N28.77 trillion, not N23 trillion as purported.

The lawmaker highlighted that President Bola Tinubu presented a budget proposal of N27.2 trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly on November 29, 2023.

Addressing the budget adjustments, Plang explained that the additional sum of approximately 1.5 trillion was incorporated at the request of the executive, primarily to address pressing issues such as food security and bolstering security measures.

He clarified, “These additions were not part of the initial budget proposal. Urgent provisions were necessary due to challenges like food insecurity stemming from fuel subsidy removal and currency devaluation.”

Plang emphasized the need for increased funding for security agencies to procure weaponry, noting that certain expenditures, particularly for security, were not explicitly outlined in the printed budget.

Furthermore, Plang expressed gratitude for the cooperative relationship between the legislative and executive branches, attributing it to the executive’s understanding of legislative processes, given the significant presence of former lawmakers in key executive positions.

He cited examples such as the Vice President, Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the First Lady, all of whom have a background in legislative affairs, fostering a conducive atmosphere for collaboration between the two arms of government.

  • Failure to Act: Ibe claims the government failed in its responsibilities regarding the death, which occurred at the Uburu residence of Works Minister David Umahi.

  • Forensic Concerns: He questioned the absence of a state-conducted autopsy, stating that without one, it is impossible to determine the cause of death or identify potential foul play, negligence, or torture.

  • Required Procedures: Ibe maintains that in such cases, the police are required to secure the scene, gather forensic evidence, and question all involved parties.
