Ohuabunwa, a former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, made this recommendation on Monday in Arochukwu, Abia State.

He stressed that implementing such measures could significantly reduce fatalities, especially among low-income individuals who struggle to afford essential drugs or manage their health conditions effectively.

Ohuabunwa highlighted the importance of providing medical palliatives to mitigate the impact of skyrocketing drug prices across the country’s pharmacies. Advertisement

While acknowledging the government’s efforts in distributing food palliatives, Ohuabunwa emphasized the need for medical interventions to save lives.

“Considering the high inflation and currency devaluation, with most raw and finished materials being imported, the government must address this issue. While food palliatives are essential, medical palliatives are equally crucial for the survival of Nigerians,” Ohuabunwa stated.

Key Arguments

  • Government Responsibility: Ibe asserts that under Nigerian law, the government must treat any sudden, suspicious, or unnatural death as a crime against the state.

  • Investigative Obligation: He argues that the government’s duty to investigate such deaths cannot be blocked or halted by the deceased’s family.

  • Forensic Concerns: He questioned the absence of a state-conducted autopsy, stating that without one, it is impossible to determine the cause of death or identify potential foul play, negligence, or torture.

  • Required Procedures: Ibe maintains that in such cases, the police are required to secure the scene, gather forensic evidence, and question all involved parties.
