Outrage as FG Allocates N90 Billion to Subsidize Hajj Fare Amid Economic Hardship In a move sparking widespread criticism, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has come under fire for allocating a staggering N90 billion to subsidize the 2024 pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia amidst prevailing economic challenges…….READ ALSO

According to a report by Daily Trust on Saturday, the Nigerian Federal Government disbursed N90 billion to subsidize hajj fares, falling short of the N230 billion originally requested by the commission.

Recall that the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) had announced a fare of N4.9 million per pilgrim last December, based on an exchange rate of N897 per US dollar. However, in a recent statement by spokesperson Fatima Usara, the commission hiked the fare by N1,918,032.91, bringing the total amount to N6.8 million.

Nigerians have taken to social media platforms to express their dismay over the government’s decision to allocate such a substantial amount for hajj subsidies amidst pressing socio-economic needs.

Here are some of the reactions:

@Sarki: “It’s outrageous for the FG to spend N90 billion on hajj fare subsidies while many Nigerians struggle to afford basic necessities like electricity and food.”

@Yelesowore: “This government continues to disappoint; instead of addressing pressing issues like the 13 million out-of-school children, they prioritize subsidizing religious ceremonies in wealthy Gulf states like Saudi Arabia.”

@Omotayo of Lagos: “Subsidizing Hajj is unnecessary; those who can afford it should go, while resources should be directed towards alleviating poverty and improving living conditions.”

@realmuhammadd: “Allow those who can afford it to go for Hajj; there’s no justification for such extensive subsidies.”

The allocation of N90 billion for hajj fare subsidies has sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s priorities amidst economic hardship

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
