The U.S Navy mourns the loss of Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class, Oriola Michael Aregbesola, who tragically fell off the USS Mason (DDG 87) while on duty in the Red Sea on March 20.

His journey in the Navy began in July 2020, and he quickly proved himself as a valuable asset upon joining HSM-74 in December of the same year.

Commander Eric Kohut, HSM-74 commanding officer, praised Aregbesola’s exemplary dedication, describing him as a selfless sailor who embodied the warrior spirit of the United States Navy. Aregbesola’s commitment and exceptional performance touched the hearts of his fellow servicemen, leaving an indelible mark on the entire Swamp Fox community.

As part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, USS Mason and HSM-74 continue their mission in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, carrying forward Aregbesola’s legacy of service and valor.

Meanwhile, on social media, friends and acquaintances of the deceased share their grief and fond memories. One friend, quoting a tweet where Aregbesola announced his enlistment into the U.S Navy after renouncing his Nigerian citizenship, expresses profound sorrow at the untimely loss.
