In an interview with OkayAfrica, reposted by HYPETRIBE on Monday, Davido shared that during internal listening sessions, the song failed to stand out and wasn’t initially seen as a favorite by his team.
“Man, it’s so crazy because that song almost didn’t make the album. With You was not in anybody’s top five,” he admitted.
He added that the song’s massive success has been an emotional experience, often reflecting on how close it came to being left out. “And now look at it go. Every time I perform it, my heart starts beating—what if I didn’t put this song?” he said.
With You went on to earn Davido another Grammy nomination and has become one of his most successful recent releases, topping charts and surpassing 100 million streams on Spotify.
Davido also recounted how he learned about the nomination, calling it unexpected. The news came while he was in Dubai, just days before his birthday, as he was out checking a car. “They were like, ‘Oh yeah, another nomination.’ I was like, wow. Thank God,” he recalled.
Looking ahead, the singer said his focus is on touring and releasing new music. He confirmed that he will perform at Coachella 2026, making him the only Nigerian artist on the festival lineup.
Davido is set to take the stage on both Saturdays, April 11 and April 18, 2026, in Indio, California. “Going back on tour, definitely more music. I’m about to do Coachella. Big plans,” he said.

Femi Kuti: Fela Deserves Respect, Not Comparisons – Reacts To Wizkid.
Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician and eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Femi Kuti, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the comparison of singer Wizkid to the late music legend.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The debate erupted after Wizkid claimed he was “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticisms from Seun Kuti and others over repeated comparisons between the Ojuelegba crooner and the Afrobeat icon.
Speaking during a recent interview on Arise TV via Skype from Los Angeles, Femi said he wished the controversy had never arisen, noting that he maintains good relationships with both his brother, Seun Kuti, and Wizkid, who are central to the issue.
He described the dispute as unnecessary and a misplaced priority, stressing that younger artists and musicians should focus their energy on demanding better governance rather than engaging in trivial debates.
Femi, however, emphasized that Fela stands in a class of his own and cannot be compared with any other artiste. He said the late Afrobeat pioneer deserves to be idolised and respected.
“Fela is our father, and even younger artists respect him. The Fela versus Wizkid debate shouldn’t even exist. Fela is the musical and artistic template of Nigeria,” he said.
“Fela should be placed in a category of his own and simply idolised and respected. I don’t want to get involved in the issues between Seun and Wizkid—Seun is my brother, and Wizkid is like a son to me. I honestly wish this never came up.”
Femi Kuti is currently in Los Angeles, where he is expected to receive Fela’s posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony this weekend.
