Governor Otti emphasized the importance of reigniting inter-house sports and other competitions in schools as a means of nurturing talent from a young age. He directed principals of secondary schools to prioritize inter-house sports activities, highlighting the collaboration between the State Ministries of Youths and Sports and Education to reintroduce Physical and Health Education in schools.
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to sports development, Governor Otti announced plans to professionalize sports management in the state. He revealed ongoing discussions with foreign and local investors to explore opportunities for developing and harnessing the talents of young athletes. The reactivation of the Nsulu Games Village in Isiala Ngwa North is a testament to the administration’s dedication to this cause.
Governor Otti outlined a comprehensive grassroots sports development program, which includes infrastructure upgrades, training initiatives, and exposure opportunities for talented athletes. The pilot phase will see the establishment of model sports centers in communities and urban areas, providing aspiring athletes with guidance from seasoned professionals.
Commending the Governor’s initiatives, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Nwaobilor Analaba, expressed gratitude for the procurement of sports equipment and the revitalization of grassroots games. Additionally, the efforts to lift the ban on the Umuahia township stadium by the Nigerian Professional Football League were acknowledged as a significant milestone.
Abia State’s Director of Sports, Mr. Obioma George, revealed that 1,840 students are participating in 24 different games, highlighting the enthusiasm and potential present among the state’s youth.
