According to him, “Our constitution is the biggest problem we have now; it’s an anomaly, it’s not actually a constitution; it’s something that some people drafted, and got some lawyers to knock it together because the constitution doesn’t speak to the growth and national development of our country.”
Ali Baba also advocated for the autonomy of each state, suggesting that allowing states to generate their revenue could contribute to Nigeria’s growth. He emphasized, “The truth is if you want this country to grow, let each state generate its own revenue. The Federal Government can assist them if they want to but the funds and revenue that come from certain states should not be shared with every other person.”
Reflecting on the history of state creation in Nigeria from 1967 to 1996, Ali Baba expressed skepticism about the intentions behind some state creations, suggesting they were merely political maneuvers. He mentioned instances where states were created to appease military officers or to maintain a balance between regions.
Ali Baba’s remarks shed light on the need for constitutional reform and a reconsideration of Nigeria’s governance structure to foster national development.
