Now, what about eggs? The question of whether eggs need to be washed is not straightforward.
Eggs have been a subject of controversy for years, with experts debating their health implications and whether their consumption should be moderated. While eggs can contain bacteria, microorganisms, and other impurities, the shell acts as an effective barrier, safeguarding the egg white and yolk. While it might seem logical to wash eggs after purchase and store them in the refrigerator, experts advise against it. Washing eggs not only removes impurities but also damages the natural coating that protects the shell. Once this coating is compromised, bacteria can more easily penetrate the egg, increasing the risk of contamination and infection. Additionally, washing eggs can shorten their shelf life.
So, what’s the best approach? It is recommended to store eggs in a separate container to prevent their shells from coming into contact with other foods or surfaces in the refrigerator. Additionally, remember to wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after handling eggs.
While eggs generally do not need to be washed, exceptions apply when immediate use is intended. In such cases, it is better to avoid washing them until necessary. Alternatively, any visible dirt can be gently removed from the shell surface using a cloth or paper.
As for when to wash eggs, it is advisable to do so just before consumption. While some may assume that only the egg contents are consumed and not the shell, it’s essential to consider that bacteria or microorganisms can transfer to the egg white and yolk during handling or preparation, such as when making scrambled eggs.
If you plan to cook eggs soft or hard, washing them beforehand is unnecessary as high temperatures during cooking will neutralize any potential threats.
Consuming raw eggs carries a risk of salmonella contamination. To minimize this risk, it is recommended to scald the eggshells in boiling water before use. The Sanitary and Epidemiological Station suggests pouring boiling water over the eggshells, soaking them for two to three minutes, and then rinsing them with running water.
Furthermore, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of washing hands before preparing meals, as research indicates that nearly 65% of consumers overlook this practice. Placing unwashed eggs near other food items or on surfaces where fruits or bread are later placed can also pose a significant risk of contamination.

The party’s warning comes amid controversy over the approval of a fresh ₦100 billion loan by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The Assembly, presided over by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, approved the loan during plenary on Wednesday.
The latest borrowing request has sparked reactions and renewed debate over the financial management of the state under Makinde’s administration.
The APC declared that Makinde, who is also the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, and officials who served under him would be held responsible for any alleged misappropriation of public funds.
The party stated its position in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, and made available to Daily Post on Thursday.
Sadare also criticised the governor’s proposed expenditure of ₦4.2 billion on the forthcoming local government election in the state.
He insisted that Makinde and his associates would be required to account for any state funds allegedly misused before the end of the governor’s tenure.
“As a matter of fact, Engr. Makinde and his cronies shall be made to cough out every kobo of the money belonging to our dear state which they have misappropriated while in office immediately after the expiration of his final term in about seven months,” Sadare said.

Adeleke gave the assurance on Thursday during the inauguration of the Osun State Presidential Campaign Council in Osogbo, where he declared that the coalition was formed exclusively to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The governor also set a target of securing more than 1.5 million votes for the President in Osun State.
The inauguration attracted political leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Accord Party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who have joined forces to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Using a football analogy, Adeleke described the coalition as a formidable team comprising some of the strongest political figures in the state.

Reports indicate that the 51-year-old entertainer became unwell on Thursday while participating in a panel discussion on Owass FM’s morning programme, Oman Nkoso.
Providing details of the incident, the programme’s host, Prince Kwaw Gyimah, disclosed that Dzokoto had driven himself to the radio station earlier that morning.
According to Gyimah, the discussion began at approximately 8:45 a.m. before the actor suddenly took ill, forcing the production team to suspend the broadcast.
The radio station later confirmed his death in a statement, revealing that he was rushed to a hospital for emergency medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The station’s management and staff expressed shock over the sudden loss, describing the incident as a tragic event that occurred during their regular programming.
While extending condolences to Dzokoto’s family, friends, colleagues and other affected persons, the station appealed to the public and media organisations to respect the family’s privacy.
It also cautioned against circulating unverified information about the circumstances surrounding his death.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident, which occurred in the course of our regular programming,” the statement read.
Dzokoto was widely known for playing Judge Koboo in the popular Ghanaian television series Efiewura, a role that earned him recognition among audiences.
He also gained prominence as the host of TV3’s food and tourism programme, Edziban, which highlighted Ghanaian cuisine and local food businesses.
Beyond his entertainment career, Dzokoto was involved in politics. In 2016, he contested the Tarkwa-Nsuaem parliamentary seat under the platform of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC).
