Governor Pastor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially assented to the Bulk Purchase Agency and Assets Management and Maintenance Agency Bills, which were previously passed by the State House of Assembly……CONTINUE READING

The announcement came through a release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, and shared with the press in Uyo on Thursday. During an enlarged State Executive Council meeting at the EXCO Chambers, Governor Umo Eno commended the State House of Assembly for their prompt action in passing both bills.

Highlighting the significance of the Bulk Purchase Bill, the statement emphasized that it was a direct response to the rising costs of staple food items across the nation due to prevailing economic challenges. Governor Umo Eno signed the bill as part of an intervention effort aimed at alleviating the people’s suffering.

According to Udoh, the establishment of a dedicated agency was deemed the most effective approach to intervene in the market and provide staple food items to the populace at reduced prices, as outlined in the Bulk Purchase Agency bill.

Governor Umo Eno reiterated that while this intervention addresses immediate concerns, the long-term solution lies in revitalizing agriculture. Plans are underway to establish an Agricultural Committee to support citizens with seedlings, encouraging a return to farming to sustainably reduce food prices.

Additionally, the second bill focuses on establishing the State’s Assets Register, separate from the Akwa Ibom State Road and Other Infrastructure Maintenance Agency (AKROIMA), which primarily focuses on road maintenance. This measure aims to promote a robust maintenance culture and includes provisions for an occupational safety department, aligning with standards observed elsewhere.

Through these legislative initiatives, the Akwa Ibom State government aims to enhance food security, promote asset management, and foster a safer working environment for its citizens.
