A tumultuous scene unfolded in the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, marked by startling revelations, heated debates, and a suspension. Fresh details emerged during the plenary session, shedding light on the allocation of constituency project funds and allegations of budget padding………CONTINUE READING
According to disclosures made during the session, senior senators, termed as ranking senators, purportedly received a significant sum of N500 million each for their constituency projects in the 2024 budget. This revelation sparked a fierce debate among lawmakers, leading to a suspension and subsequent resignation.
Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, found himself at the center of the storm after his interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he alleged discrepancies in the budget. The interview triggered a motion of privilege and issue of national importance against Ningi, leading to a three-month suspension and his resignation as Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.
During the deliberations, Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe disclosed that some ranking senators had received N500 million each for constituency projects. This revelation stirred controversy and led to a rowdy session as senators disputed the claims.
However, Senator Jarigbe later clarified that it was Ningi who informed him about the allocation, shifting the focus back to the initial allegations made by Ningi. Ningi denied using the term “budget padding” but raised concerns about anomalies and discrepancies in the budget, particularly regarding project allocations across senatorial districts.
Amidst the chaos, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that the allocated funds were designated for constituency projects, aiming to address various developmental needs within their respective districts. He urged patience from Nigerians to witness the impact of these projects over the coming months.
Additionally, allegations surfaced regarding a planned coup against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and concerns were raised about the integrity of the Senate.
The Senate’s response to the situation included the suspension of Ningi for three months, along with warnings issued to other senators. The deliberations highlighted the gravity of the allegations and the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the budgeting process.
As the Senate navigates through this tumultuous period, Nigerians await further developments and hope for transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct among their elected representatives.
