The strike, which commenced on February 1, was initiated by the ASUU chapter at the university due to several grievances, including the non-implementation of promotions, payment of earned academic allowances (EAA), and annual step increments.

The union stated that the suspension of the strike follows the intervention of Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, who personally assured the union of addressing their demands. According to the statement, Governor Alia pledged to resolve the grievances raised by ASUU.

During a congress meeting, members were briefed on the governor’s intervention and his commitment to resolving the issues. The officials were subsequently mandated to enter into a tripartite agreement. This agreement addresses the key concerns that led to the strike.

The ASUU chapter expressed confidence in the governor’s ability to implement the agreement fully and expeditiously. As a result, the union decided to suspend the strike, trusting that the governor will satisfactorily address their demands.

The suspension of the strike marks a positive step towards resolving the issues affecting academic staff at Benue State University, demonstrating the effectiveness of dialogue and negotiation in addressing labor disputes within the education sector.
