Among the array of botanical materials used for dyeing fabrics, avocado seeds stand out for their ability to produce beautiful hues ranging from soft pinks to deep corals. Let’s explore the fascinating art of dyeing fabrics naturally with avocado seeds and its environmental benefits.

Avocado seeds, often discarded as waste, hold hidden potential as a sustainable dye source. Rich in tannins and antioxidants, avocado seeds impart vibrant colors to fabrics while minimizing environmental impact. Here’s how you can harness the natural dyeing power of avocado seeds:

  1. Gather Your Materials: Begin by collecting avocado seeds from ripe fruits. Thoroughly wash and dry the seeds to remove any remaining pulp or debris.
  2. Prepare the Dye Bath: To extract the dye from avocado seeds, chop them into smaller pieces or grind them into a coarse powder using a blender or mortar and pestle. Place the seeds in a pot of water and bring it to a gentle boil. Allow the mixture to simmer for an hour or more to release the dye compounds.
  3. Strain the Dye: Once the dye bath has simmered sufficiently, strain out the avocado seed particles using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. The resulting liquid is your natural dye solution, ready to be used for coloring fabrics.
  4. Mordant the Fabric: Before dyeing, prepare your fabric by treating it with a mordant solution to help the dye adhere to the fibers. Common mordants include alum, iron, and copper, which can be dissolved in hot water and added to the dye bath.
  5. Dyeing Process: Immerse the pre-mordanted fabric into the avocado seed dye bath, ensuring that it is fully submerged. Stir the fabric occasionally to achieve an even distribution of color. Depending on the desired shade, allow the fabric to soak in the dye bath for several hours or overnight.
  6. Rinse and Dry: Once the fabric has reached the desired color intensity, remove it from the dye bath and rinse it thoroughly with cool water to remove excess dye. Hang the dyed fabric to air dry away from direct sunlight.

By utilizing avocado seeds as a natural dye source, artisans and textile enthusiasts can embrace sustainable practices and reduce reliance on synthetic dyes that pose environmental risks. Not only does natural dyeing with avocado seeds offer a way to repurpose food waste, but it also produces uniquely beautiful colors with subtle variations that reflect the beauty of nature.

Whether you’re an experienced dyer or a novice crafter, experimenting with avocado seed dyeing opens up a world of creative possibilities while contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to textile production. Let’s embrace the beauty of natural dyes and celebrate the rich heritage of traditional dyeing techniques.

Oshiomhole, who also served as the former President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), praised Wike for his developmental efforts and expressed gratitude to the PDP for allowing him to serve as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the APC government.

Wike, previously a staunch PDP member, supported APC’s Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election after a fallout with his party. As a reward for his support, Wike was appointed FCT Minister.

Oshiomhole compared the situation to a football club letting its “best player” join a rival team. “Thank you, PDP, for giving us Nyesom Wike to help us fix Abuja,” he said. “When you give your best player to another club, you pay a heavy price.”

The lawmaker representing Edo North also joked about the PDP’s decision, saying they didn’t ask for a transfer fee and hinted that the APC might not want to return Wike, even joking about setting up a toll gate to prevent it.

At a New Year luncheon in Port Harcourt, Oshiomhole praised Wike for his contributions to Abuja, highlighting his commitment to the rule of law and environmental regulations.
