Presiding over the case, Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the sentence, offering Victor the option of a four million naira fine. While delivering the judgment, Justice Oshodi expressed disbelief that the convict committed the offense out of necessity, though he opted to reduce the sentence by 20 percent.
Under the judgment, Victor will forfeit all items recovered from him, including phones, an ATM card, a manager’s cheque, to the Federal Government.
The EFCC counsel, Mr. Abubakar Dambua, detailed the fraudulent activities of the convict and others, leading to Victor’s arrest following a raid. Items recovered from Victor included an iPhone 13, a Samsung phone, an ATM card, a manager’s cheque, and fraudulent documents.
During the proceedings, Victor admitted to creating a false account on Facebook under the name ‘Agent Fred Smith’ and deceiving unsuspecting victims into applying for a Social Economic Grant Programme, for which he requested payment for processing and delivery.
In response, Victor expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging his use of the scam proceeds to improve his family’s living conditions and pay for school fees. His defense counsel, Ms. E. A. Ukpai, highlighted Victor’s realization of his mistake and his mother’s ill health, pleading for a non-custodial sentence.
The case underscores the legal repercussions faced by individuals engaged in online scams and the judiciary’s role in dispensing justice tempered with mercy.
