Justice Abiola Soladoye, presiding over the case, determined that the prosecution had successfully proven the charge of defilement against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt.
Jeremiah was brought before the court on a charge of sexual assault by penetration under Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
According to the lead prosecution counsel, Olusola Soneye, the convict inserted his finger into the victim’s vagina, an act that occurred in 2021 at the convict’s workshop in the Mammy Barracks Market, Ojo area of Lagos State.
During the trial, three witnesses, including the victim, testified against the defendant.
In her testimony, the victim recounted that the defendant used to purchase all the sachet water she hawked and would give her N100 each time he assaulted her.
Despite the abuse, the victim did not disclose the incidents out of fear of retribution from her mother, who eventually discovered the truth and punished her.
Jeremiah, in his defence, initially denied knowing the victim but later admitted to being acquainted with her through her mother.
Justice Soladoye described the defendant as a “pathological liar” and found the prosecution witnesses’ testimonies credible and compelling.
The judge held that the evidence presented established the offence of sexual assault by penetration beyond doubt.
Furthermore, she criticized the victim’s mother for sending her daughter to sell sachet water, thereby exposing her to harm.
Ultimately, Jeremiah was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, with his name to be registered in the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.
