Senator Isah Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee, disclosed this during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, indicating that the committee would commence its investigation this week.
The ‘Ways and Means’ loan, typically an overdraft from the central bank to cover budget shortfalls or address urgent national needs, requires approval from the executive and validation by the legislature.
Prompted by concerns over alleged reckless spending of the overdraft from the CBN, the Senate initiated the probe, attributing it to contributing factors in the current food and security crises.
Jibrin, also known as Echocho, noted that the panel had initiated preliminary inquiries based on available documents, intending to seek clarifications from the CBN.
He emphasized the need to understand the beneficiaries, terms, and conditions of the loans, reiterating that the CBN is not a charitable institution but a lender.
The committee aims to uncover the entities and individuals who benefited from the loans, as well as scrutinize the terms and conditions attached to them.

A central focus of Okonkwo’s critique was directed at the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Okonkwo highlighted that Obi had previously joined the ADC of his own accord only to exit abruptly before the party’s internal processes concluded. Questioning the resilience required for high-level leadership, Okonkwo asserted that those aspiring to the presidency must be prepared to endure internal party competition rather than evade it.
Expressing concern over the potential impact on the upcoming election, Okonkwo warned that supporting Obi in 2027 would effectively serve as an indirect vote for President Tinubu by splitting the opposition. He stated:
“It is either you are working for Tinubu directly, in other words you are in APC, or you are working for Tinubu indirectly, because when you divide the votes of the coalition and the opposition, you are still making Tinubu better placed to win… You want to be the president of a challenged country, and you are running away from challenges. In 2027, anybody voting any vote whatsoever to Peter Obi is voting for Tinubu, and don’t say I didn’t tell you.”

Consequently, he argued that security agencies must adopt a more robust, multi-faceted approach, prioritizing the decisive dismantling of criminal networks to effectively restore peace and security in affected regions.
