Nigeria’s Economy Shows Resilience Despite Global Challenges, Former British Council Director Asserts
Former British Council Director in Abuja, David Roberts, has challenged the characterization of the Nigerian economy as a mess, citing its recent GDP growth of 3.46 percent as evidence to the contrary. He criticized Nigeria’s fuel subsidy policy, arguing that resources allocated to subsidies could be better utilized for infrastructure development such as schools, hospitals, dams, and transportation systems.
Roberts emphasized the importance of prudent financial management, suggesting that if Nigeria effectively utilizes funds redirected from fuel subsidies, it could achieve economic growth levels seen before 2015.
In a statement, Roberts highlighted the need for Nigeria to strengthen regulatory institutions and combat corruption to enhance investor confidence and economic stability.
He commended Nigeria’s decision to abolish the fuel subsidy, noting positive outcomes such as GDP growth, a thriving stock market, and increased capital importation. Roberts urged the government to remain steadfast in its economic reforms and resist pressure to reinstate fuel subsidies or devalue the currency.
Roberts concluded by asserting that Nigeria’s economy is on a positive trajectory, evidenced by its growth rate, and emphasized the importance of sustaining current economic policies for continued progress. He dismissed the notion of Nigeria’s economy being in disarray, citing its growth performance as evidence to the contrary.
