Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has alleged that specific Fulani factions are rejoicing over Atiku Abubakar’s presidential candidacy, viewing it as a path to securing the Nigerian presidency for their ethnic group. Lawal defended his use of the term “Kachalla”—a title he associated with local leaders of bandit groups like that of Bello Turji—to describe Abubakar, explicitly questioning the former vice president’s Fulani identity and allegiances.

A central pillar of Lawal’s critique is that Abubakar has remained silent regarding rampant insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North and his home state of Adamawa. Lawal contended that the presidential hopeful has failed to publicly denounce kidnappings and mass killings, nor has he visited affected communities to offer condolences.

Furthermore, Lawal pointed to the 2022 murder of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto as a point of contention. He alleged that after initially condemning the incident, Abubakar retracted his statement, claiming it had been issued by an aide without authorization. Lawal argued that a leader seeking the highest office in the country should be willing to openly condemn violence and genocide, regardless of the circumstances.
