The incident, described as a lone accident, involved an unidentified commercial driver operating a Mercedes truck. Reports indicate that the tragedy unfolded around 9:30 am, with excessive speed and loss of control being cited as the primary causes.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver, navigating at high speed, abruptly lost control of the vehicle, careening into a large gutter by the roadside before crashing.
Confirming the grim occurrence, Margaret Onabe, the acting Sector Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State, revealed that two male adults were tragically involved in the crash.
“Onabe stated, “The cause of the crash was attributed to excessive speed and loss of control. According to eyewitnesses, the driver was speeding, lost control, and rammed into a big gutter by the roadside, and crashed.”
Tragically, both the driver and his conductor lost their lives in the collision. Their bodies were swiftly transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Mortuary in Ihiala by compassionate bystanders before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team.
Efforts by the FRSC team to clear the expressway of debris swiftly ensued, restoring normalcy to both vehicular and human movement in the area.
In response to the devastating incident, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander for Anambra State, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He reiterated the imperative for motorists to prioritize safety over speed, urging adherence to safe driving practices.
“He warned motorists to desist from excessive speed and drive within the safe speed limit they can control. Let us drive to stay alive, road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Onabe emphasized.
As the community grapples with the loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for vigilance and responsible driving on the roads.
